Watch in a Day: Direnzo DRZ_Type 250F, a timepiece in remembrance of classic Formula One racing

Founded in Switzerland in 2015 by Sergio Godoy, Direnzo Watches debuts their first timepiece collection clearly inspired by Formula One race cars from the 1940-50s. The fancy model name, DRZ_Type_250F, derived from the classic Maserati Type 250F race car and its design is certainly no stranger to fans of vintage cars. I managed to spend a day with it, not in a Maserati but on a Triumph modern classic motorcycle, and it surely looks appropriate.

First things first, the DRZ_Type_250F comes with either a white or black dial. What we have here is a prototype version of the black dial, DRZ_Type_250F_B. So you must be wondering why the Maserati Type 250F in particular? According to Sergio, he is inspired by this car because of the Jaeger’s tachometer and also the fact that the Maserati Type 250F is a “rough competition car” – each component is designed to make it run faster. Another one of his favorites is the Mercedes 300SLR, driven by Stirling Moss. Definitely a man with good taste.

On the wrist, the DRZ_Type_250F is a pleasantly light-weight watch paired with a slim natural leather strap – soft and supple. The dial is extremely clear and appears much larger due to the slim bezel. My only issue with the dial is actually the sapphire crystal being too reflective for my personal taste. It seems to be an inherent issue for most microbrand watches.

Thanks to its contrasting hands and automotive-inspired markers, looking at the time only requires a quick glance. Incorporated into the design are the thin short lugs, allowing the watch to sit completely flat on the wrist at just 48mm lug to lug. The level of comfort is so superior that you would not even realise there is a watch on your wrist.

Operating the watch is as smooth as it looks. The signed crown is ridged and free from any obstruction for maximum contact when winding or setting the time. It might be a little intrusive on the wrist if you like wearing your watch loose or closer to the end of your wrist.

On first impression, the side profile of the watch reminds me of engine pistons. Truth be told, according to Sergio, his goal was to visually reduced the height of the case with the dual-cylinder design. It is basically a “floating” bezel that rests on the main body. Of course, it is also inspired by the dashboard gauges of old race cars.

No fuss screw down caseback with a simple iteration of the Direnzo logo. Beating underneath is an automatic Seiko NH35 that runs like a standard grade ETA movement. The benefit of a Japanese movement? Its serviceability and low-cost replacement. Though good news, Sergio did mention that they are planning to go “Swiss made” next year, probably with an ETA movement. But do expect price hike.
