Tropic Diver 300 by Evant Watches, re-emerging design from the 60s

Diver watch designs are usually generic, sterile and more often than not micro brands tend to err on the safe side with ‘beaten to death’ models. The Tropic Diver 300 by Evant Watches is inspired by a lessser-known diver watch from the 60s, the extremely rare Breguet no. 1646 with only 60 pieces ever made. Let’s dive into the details.

There are two variants of the Tropic Diver 300 – Tropic Diver 300 and Tropic Diver 300 Vintage – featuring different case finishing and dial in either exquisite hand polished with faux radium maxi dial or military grade matt sandblast with regular maxi dial. There is a balance in each model without striking a jarring note on any single element. In my opinion, symmetry and visual equilibrium are essential principles when it comes to designing diver watch.

The Tropic Diver 300 Vintage looks very similar to the extremely rare and unknown diver watch, the Breguet no. 1646. So it’s probably a sort of homage (a worthy one, of course!).

On the dial side, the large painted markers and lollipop hour-hand liven up a relatively simple-looking watch. Its non-intrusive date window tucks away inconspicuously at the 3 o’clock marker without breaking the dial’s symmetry. Hiding in plain sight is the 3mm thick domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and slim bezel which looks like bakelite, but only it’s not.

According to the team at Evant Watches, they spent weeks experimenting and prototyping the bezel. Their goal was to replicate the same finishing, looks and feel with high tech ceramic while retaining the bakelite bezel’s vintage appeal.  The result is a scratch-resistant bezel fabricated from a special blend of ceramic finished with luminous minimalist indices.

Multiple coats of Super-LumiNova BGW9 (for Tropic Diver 300) and Old Vintage Radium (for Tropic Diver 300 Vintage) are applied to the markers and hands for that extra dose of brightness in dark environments.

The 41mm watch case is a nice, modern fit for gentlemen and also ladies who prefer wearing large watches. Thanks to the chamfered lugs, the Tropic Diver 300 will sit nicely on most wrist.

Powered by Swiss-made ETA 2824-2 Elabore grade movement, it is more than enough to fulfil its function as a hardy sports watch. There are four different grades for ETA movements: Standard, Elabore, Top and Chronometre. Elabore grade movements are adjusted to four positions with basic decorations.

The Tropic Diver 300 is water-resistant to 300m with a relatively low profile of 14mm. Each watch is tested on industrial machine to withstand 32 ATM so it’s safe to strap it on when engaging in aqua activities.

As an added value, customers will receive three straps which includes a standard NATO strap plus a leather and canvas strap of their liking:

  • Black Military Grade Nylon NATO Strap (Made with the best Nylon and 316L stainless steel hardware) – Perfect for any water activity. 250mm long.
  • Handmade Light Tan Italian Leather Strap (Saddle stitched leather with natural tanning agents) – Perfect for a smart causal profile sipping latte at the cafe. Length: 75mm/120mm; Thickness: 4mm.
  • Handmade Dark Mocha Italian Leather Strap (Saddle stitched leather with natural tanning agents) – Perfect for a corporate profile at the boardroom meeting
    Length: 75mm/120mm; Thickness: 4mm.
  • Canvas Leather Strap (Saddle stitched canvas with black leather lining) – Perfect match with denim and sneakers

Evant Watches is working exclusively with Gnomon Watches to offer the Tropic Diver 300 and Tropic Diver 300 Vintage at US$499 (S$658.68). Limited to 150 pieces for each model and they are selling out fast! As of 8 February 2017, the Tropic Diver 300 Vintage is completely sold out at Gnomon.

Evan Parker, Co-Founder of Evant Watches, said they “probably won’t get such success with our (sic) debut model without Gnomon” and the partnership “has been good and straight forward”. It is not known whether the Tropic Diver 300 will go into regular production but they “will have more interesting designs coming in a couple of months”.
