I have received many emails on Kickstarter projects but never one that’s so unusual. From the ship to your wrist, each Troy watch is handcrafted from solid oak or walnut shipwood. Theo and Bart, the founders of Lumbr were inspired by the Trojan Horse that the Greek used to enter the city of Troy during the Trojan War. So what makes this watch so interesting?
The Troy’s case and bracelet are both constructed using wood. This means, no two Troy watches are the same. We are talking about the difference in the wood’s grain, pattern and colour tone. Unlike steel, it is definitely more susceptible to getting nicked up and likely to age faster over time.
Other than its case and bracelet, everything else is crafted like any other timepiece. Featuring screwed down case back with sapphire crystal and, quite fasinating, the dial and hands also uses wood. On top of the chapter ring sits horizontally a wooden bridge across the dial from the 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock position. This wooden holds the 3 wooden hands—the most unique hand is the hour hand, which looks almost like a ship’s wheel.
Powering the Troy is the Miyota 8N24 skeleton caliber which you can view from the dial side and through the case back. Miyota calibers are not the best or most accurate movements but are definitely hardy and reliable. It is favoured by many microbrands in order to keep their cost low. I mean, look around you, so many Japanese cars around. If it’s Jap, it’s gonna be good. Trust me.
On the wrist, the Troy sits at about 11m tall and could be a little large for some with its 46mm case diameter. The large watch trend is still on, so I don’t see why this could be a potential con. While for those who are worried about the material, don’t be. The Troy is hypoallegernic.
Ok, now you might be wondering, “Hey, using wood isn’t that sustainable! They are cutting down trees!”. Hold your horses. For a better world, Lumbr is committed to giving back to mother nature. They will plant one tree in an area that needs it for every backer for the Troy.
Only 10 days left till the end of their Kickstarter campaign. Check them out and back the Troy at €199 (~S$300)!
