Jacopo Dondi, a Single-Hand 24-Hour Watch

Jacopo Dondi was launched in June 2016 as a Kickstarter campaign, raising over $50K in pre-orders. Based in Perth, Founders Jake and Carmen came up with the concept thinking it was an original idea but soon found out otherwise. In fact, the single-hand 24-hour timekeeping concept has been around for almost 700 years and was the original way of telling time (think: sundial). Let’s take a look at their modern take on an ancient concept.

The Jacopo Dondi’s dial features a single hand that completes one revolution, every 24 hours instead of 12 hours for conventional timepieces with two hands. This directly affects one’s perception of time in a day and could possibly be a more natural way to read time. Switching to a single-hand watch is almost a leap of faith for some as you will definitely lose accuracy to the minute. But think about it, how often do you go “the time now is 3.27pm now” when someone asks you what’s the time on your wrist?

Albeit it is not totally practical for everyone in the world to start using 24-hour dial.  Instead, Jake and Carmen see Jacopo Dondi as an unconventional alternative for those more experimental, free-spirited individuals who will find this to be a unique method of measuring time.

The Jacopo Dondi’s case is measured 42mm and rather similar to the Orient Bambino with its polished slim bezel and slightly straighter lugs. There is an option for the strap, on either the silicon or the genuine leather, both coming in different colours. Powered by a Swiss-made Ronda 515.24h Quartz movement, Jacopo Dondi is able to keep its price low and definitely a no-frills watch.

Besides measuring time, you can also use the Jacopo Dondi as a compass. Here’s how:

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE: Simply point the hand towards the position of the sun, and wherever the ’24’ marker is pointing, is North.

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE: Simply point the ’12’ marker towards the position of the sun, and wherever the hand is pointing, is North.

The brand prefers sticking to the aesthetics and styling of a traditional timepiece; and with the starting price of $240 AUD , it should appeal to a broader group audience from those who are looking for a clean dressy watch to anyone interested in owning an inexpensive single-hand watch.

Note: The ‘Jacopo Dondi’ branding on the watch dial has been digitally removed from all images in this review. Future productions of Jacopo Dondi will have a different branding on the dial.
