BOLDR Journey, a vintage aviation-inspired watch with a modern tick

BOLDR Watches, a new Kickstarter project started by the same team that brought to us the TRAVISLEON Heirloom mechanical timepiece, just launched their first series of vintage aviation-inspired timepiece.

The BOLDR Journey Chronograph timepiece comes in three variants—Wasp, Sopwith and Warhawk—each with its outstanding dial design and they are all powered by the Seiko VK64 mechanical-quartz movement.

For those unfamiliar with meca-quartz movements, these are basically hybrid movements with both mechanical and quartz components. The primary timekeeping is regulated by a quartz crystal which means battery will be required for it to function. Whereas the chronograph function is completely mechanical and operates like a regular mechanical chronograph timepiece.

The dial oozes with modern style featuring a double-layered sandwich dial and two distinct sub-dials, one on the left for the chronograph’s minute indicator and one on the right with 24-hour indicator. There is no second hand for the primary timekeeping and it is totally not an issue for a timepiece like this. Frankly, I do not favor watches with date window but it is pretty well-executed on the BOLDR Journey with the date window sitting at the 6 o’clock marker.

How can we not love watches with domed mineral crystal? Featuring a bezel-less design, the large domed mineral crystal on the BOLDR Journey gives the dial a “pop-out” appearance while creating a soft, even tone of light on the textured watch dial.

In celebration of their first step with the BOLDR Journey, the brand has collaborated with Malaysian tattoo artist Kevin Tan to design a custom art for the case back. Each BOLDR Journey variant will possess a unique, custom-designed artwork on the case back—carefully created to represent each BOLDR line of watches, and what it represents.

Get the BOLDR Journey on BOLDR Watches starting from C$209 (approximately S$219 or US$159) with the early bird special!
