My Pick for Baselworld 2016: The Tudor Heritage Black Bay 36

With all the hype for Baselworld 2016 slowly ticking away, I think it’s a great time now to look back at some of the releases. Rolling out, here’s my first Pick for Baselworld 2016.

Releasing a 36mm watch in 2016 is a bold move, and Tudor is indeed one of the boldest watch brands in recent years. In fact, not totally unfamiliar, some of the greatest watches by (big brother) Rolex are sized at 36mm—the Datejust ref. 1603, Day-Date ref. 1803, and the legendary Explorer ref. 6610.

The all-new Tudor Heritage Black Bay 36 ref. 79500 ticked all the boxes in my checklist for modern vintage-inspired watches. One of the notable features of the Black Bay range is the clean symmetrical dial which makes them very pleasing to the uninitiated eyes. Now without the diving bezel, the dial of the Black Bay 36 pops right out while retaining its original beauty.

At a distance, the Black Bay 36 aesthetic looks very much like the Rolex Explorer ref. 14270, albeit the dial. And, I believe this is a very good (and cheaper) alternative to the Explorer since the new Explorer ref. 214270 now comes in a 39mm case, which kind of divided opinions among Rolex aficionados. Moving on, you will notice the smooth steel bezel polished to perfection and the relatively large crown paired with black crown tube that gives the Black Bay 36 a sporty chic yet elegant look.

For Baselworld 2016, Tudor refreshed the entire Black Bay line-up with their COSC manufacture movement, the MT5602. Fortunately (unfortunately for some), the Black Bay 36 stayed on the old bandwagon with the ETA2824-2 which I find it’s a good move by Tudor. Keeping the retail price below S$4,000 allows the brand to compete in slightly wider price segment, considering that Tudor generally targets a younger audience with above average spending power.

Overall, the Tudor Heritage Black Bay 36 is a different kind of beauty in comparison with the original Black Bays. On the urban camouflage fabric, it looks like it’s ready to take on the world, while offering a preppy-look on the lightly distressed beige-coloured leather strap. For those looking to get an understated and affordable timepiece suited for every occasion, trust me, this watch will fit the bill at just S$3,888 on the steel bracelet and S$3,456 on the leather strap.
